Brisbane’s first industry high school academy, the AITC x Protech Academy, was formed by an unlikely pairing: an industry giant (@Protech Group) and a deliberately different school (@Australian Industry Trade College) in response to a shortage of skilled, educated tradespeople for major civil projects.

The leading academy, which kicked off in July 2022, trains and educates young people starting in Year 10 to become apprentices and trainees of the highest calibre, tailored specifically for big industry.

Following a successful first six months, 18 students were signed-up into school-based apprenticeships and traineeships, allowing them to be paid for up to 28 weeks year whilst they finish Year 11 and Year 12.

The partnership between the AITC and Protech has provided students with industry connections and unmatched experiences which will set them up for long term success, including presentations from Protech leadership and key staff, and the Cross River Rail (CPB Contractors) Senior Manager and Mechanical Superintendent, and site visits at the Cross River Rail Roma Street site, FKG Baringa, Protech Springwood, Multiplex Queens Wharf, Thiess, Brown and Hurley, and Apollo Motor Homes.

Based at the Australian Industry Trade College campus in Spring Hill, the Academy is for high achieving students in hi-vis who have the ambition to work on large-scale civil projects. Many industries talk about ‘growing their own’ but very few are willing to take the brave step towards doing so. The AITC x Protech Academy is a combination of deliberately different education, industry-driven training, and technical expertise to develop apprentices and trainees of the highest calibre, starting in Year 10.
