The AITC offers an innovative curriculum combined with extensive real-world experience that inspires learning and a passion for work. The Toowoomba Campus commenced with a Year 10 cohort in July 2019 and grow to a Year 10 – 12 cohort by January 2021, with intake points as follows:

2020 – Years 10 and 11 in January and July

2021 – Years 10 and 11 in January and July and Year 12 in January

2022 – Years 10 and 11 in January and July and Year 12 in January

The AITC Program

The AITC program is designed to provide young people with a unique opportunity to finish their senior schooling and start a career in the industry of their choosing. The learning experiences “on site” at one our campuses position young people to achieve a Queensland Certificate of Education and  the training and work placements when “off site” ensure that AITC young people transition smoothly into work and training.

The AITC has a number of entry points into our 3 Year Program. This makes us flexible enough to meet the needs of our young people.

Year 10 intake: Starting in Year 10 gives these young people the full breadth of the 3 Year Program. This year contributes credits towards the Queensland Certificate of Education whilst working on basic literacy and numeracy skills. With a strong focus on work and life skills, a Trade Taster program and supported work experience, this program is ideally suited to young people unsure about their trade pathway. Community Service and personal development underpin this program as it establishes a solid foundation for our Year 11 and 12 program. Young people can enter this program in January or July.

Year 11 intake: This is a popular intake point and allows young people 2 years of our program. English, Maths, Business and IT are the core subjects studied for the Queensland Certificate of Education when “on site”. When “off site” young people engage with Pre- Apprenticeship Training and work placement which lead to an Apprenticeship or Traineeship. The focus is on Employability skills and character development as we work to create Australia’s finest apprentices. Young people can enter this program in January or July.

Year 12 intake: This final intake is for young people who have completed Year 11 elsewhere and have decided that the Industry pathway is best for them. In this 10 month program called “Transition to Work”, the focus is on completing the Queensland Certificate of Education and moving from work experience to an Apprenticeship or Traineeship as soon as possible. Young people can only enter this program in January.

The program structure each term involves:

  • A five week College block “on site” focused on the delivery of an education module.
  • A five to seven week Employment block “off site” focused on employability skills, work and training.

The AITC Curriculum

Curriculum at the AITC is unique. It is carefully selected to progressively develop employability skills and achieve individualised learning goals, whilst also meeting the requirements of the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) and the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA). The College aims to seamlessly blend senior education and vocational training to engage young people in purposeful learning experiences with real world relevance.

The AITC Curriculum has two integrated components:

The Academic Curriculum:

Our young people have individual study profiles determined by their entry point into the college. They study several QCAA subjects and complete nationally registered qualifications which upon completion give them 20 credit points towards their Queensland Certificate of Education.

The AITC academic curriculum is made up of learning modules that are distinct units of study in:

  • QCAA Literacy: This course is designed to help young people develop their reading, writing, oral communication and learning skills while studying topics such as Heroes and Identity.
  • English Communication (transitioning to Essential English): This literacy-based course is designed to allow young people to develop and use written, spoken and digital communication skills which underpin success in workplaces and other real-life contexts. The course covers a range of topic areas, including advertising, global issues and DIY (which focuses on trade-based tasks).
  • QCAA Numeracy: This course is designed to help young people develop their mathematical information, mathematical processes, problem-solving skills and learning while studying topics such as measurement, number and calculations, and data and statistics.
  • Pre-Vocational Math (transitioning to Essential Math): This practical numeracy-based course covers topics including tax, finance and budgeting, design and measurement. Workplace contexts are used for tasks when possible and young people are drilled in the mathematical skills required for specific trades.
  • Vocational Education and Training: Our young people complete:

Certificate I in Work and Life Skills

Certificate I, II and/or III in Business

Certificate I and II in Information, Digital Media and Technology

These courses are tailored to reflect the needs of young tradespeople as they embark on a career in industry and include topics in financial management, MYOB, manage a micro-business and electronic communication. If a young person has already achieved some qualifications (or parts thereof), the AITC will grant credit transfers for those achievements, providing we have access to original documentation from the RTO where training took place in previous year(s).  In this case, VET trainers will develop individual learning plans.

The Employment Based Curriculum:

Our young people engage in a range of work base experiences that enhance their learning when they participate in training and employment as an apprentice or trainee.

The AITC Employment-based curriculum is made up of a range of industry based experiences and an employability skills program:

  • Mentoring/Coaching: Employment Consultants from the AITC work with the Young People to guide them through the employment process. They provide assistance in areas such as resume writing, making phone calls to employers and interview techniques.
  • Trade Taster: The AITC works with partner organisations to provide the opportunity for young people to sample a range of trades.
  • Work Placements: Our young people engage in a range of work placements to engage them in their industry of choice. These vary in length, give young people real life experience in the workplace and establish connections that may launch careers.
  • Pre–Employment Training: Before young people engage in work placement, they engage in a structured training program to learn the basic skills they need to be able to participate safely and productively in work placements. This training is at a Certificate I or II level, delivered by a registered training organisation.
  • Employability Skills Training: Based upon the Core Skills for Work Framework, this training is embedded within the College’s onsite and offsite program to provide the foundation skills young people need to be successful in the workplace.

BYOD – Bring Your Own Device

The AITC is a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) college, requiring young people to bring a computing device (laptop or a notebook) to College for their personal use. Our requirement is for each young person to bring their own device. The device must meet minimum specifications related to screen size, keyboard, WIFI access, battery life and memory.
