The Boating Industry Academy is the first industry-driven program for high school students wishing to pursue a career in the boating and marine industries.
The specialist program commenced in January 2023 on the Gold Coast (Robina) with a view to moving to a Coomera base, in the heart of the largest marine precinct in the Southern Hemisphere in the future.
The initiative is supported by the Boating Industry Association Ltd (BIA), the peak industry body in Australia, as well as industry partners Stella Marine, Lightwave Yachts, Telwater, Riviera and Gold Coast City Marina.
Start your boating or marine career at school
The Academy is for career-minded young people in Year 10 or 11 (2024) looking to work in the boating and marine industry. Students spend five weeks a term in school (at Robina) and up to 28 weeks a year in the boating industry (Coomera precinct).
The program is designed to develop employability skills via work experience and immersion in a wide range of functions within the industry. This opportunity for exposure provides students with a solid base of key skills and industry knowledge before commencing a school-based apprenticeship/traineeship in Year 11.

The boating economy generates significant benefits through employment. In the year ending 31 Dec 2022, the industry reported national turnover of $9.55 billion, directly employed more than 26,000 people with more than 8000 contractors. Seventy-five per cent are in small family businesses, employing local workers and supporting local communities.
