Safety is our first thought
Seven values are at the heart of the Australian Industry Trade College (AITC). One of our values, safety, is our first thought when completing projects in the classroom, working in industry, and everywhere in between. The College is recognising National Safe Work Month this October and is joining Safe Work Australia to say together we can make a difference.
Fittingly, this year’s theme for National Safe Work Month is WHS and COVID-19. The pandemic introduced new risks for workplaces across the world, and the College was no different. The AITC introduced a new standard of cleanliness and safety, which has kept our College community safe throughout the year.
Safety on the worksite is of utmost importance at the AITC, with new young people completing job safety training in their first weeks at the College. Industry Consultants will visit workplaces to complete a WHS check prior to young people completing work experience placements, and placements will only go ahead if the site is in top condition.
Always striving to keep safety as our first thought, College staff have introduced a practice called a ‘safety moment’ at the beginning of meetings. The safety moment gives staff the opportunity to reflect on a moment where safety was displayed, or pitch an idea to create a higher level of safety on campus.
The culture of safety spans from our young people all the way to our management team, with every staff member and young person ensuring safety is their first thought. The Workplace Health and Safety team has a packed month of activities and resource sharing, with a goal for every staff member to feel safer and more informed at the close of the month.
