The Ipswich campus opens its doors

When young people arrived to the brand new Ipswich campus on 28 January for the first day of semester, they were greeted by Ipswich Principal Tracey Millar, AITC CEO Mark Hands, all the Ipswich campus staff, and a number of AITC staff from other campuses. The day started with a Principal’s Welcome from Tracey, followed by time for the young people to look around their brand new campus.

The Lowry Street building underwent extensive internal renovations in the six months leading up to the campus opening its doors to students for semester 1. The campus has been built for purpose, with classrooms, breakout spaces, murals, and a student kitchen.

CEO Mark Hands addressed the young people on their first day at the College, delivering one of his famous Wisdom Talks. He spoke to the cohort about the importance of having a good attitude when they go out into industry, as half of the group will do in term 2.

Following the Wisdom Talk, the young people were treated to a special, and enormous, cake for morning tea, and the opening of a gift from the AITC to the Ipswich campus. The gift was seven coloured hard hats, each emblazoned with the AITC values: safety, respect, pride, courage, honesty, mateship, and hard work. Seven of the new young people modelled the hard hats for a few photos with Principal Tracey.

After a break, the young people returned for IT inductions, and two class rotations. The rotations included Maths, English, and VET classes, as well as discussions with the Industry Consultants, a Personal Development session, ID card photos, and another chat with Tracey.

The day ended with a debrief and discussion about Rookies’ Camp, which the young people had attended before they started College. The Rookies’ Camp is part of the AITC induction program, and includes a two day camp at Emu Gully. Rookies’ Camp is a quintessential part of the AITC journey, and one that is highly enjoyed by the young people and staff alike.
