Crisp start for AITC’s newest Campus

It was Monday 15 July, a frosty morning in Toowoomba, with temperatures dropping to a frigid -2°C. Staff and young people huddled together to celebrate the launch of the new AITC campus. Principal David Thompson welcomed everyone with a poem to celebrate the first day of semester. As he spoke the final line, “we will soon be in Industry, making our mark on history,” there was a cheer. The students cracked party poppers while David cut the ceremonial ribbon across the campus doors.

“49 young people started at the Toowoomba campus for our inaugural year in operation. The campus currently caters to First Year (Year 10) students only, but will expand to Second Years (Year 11) in Semester 1, 2020, and will continue to grow with the cohort, until a full three-year campus is up and running in 2021,” says David.

“We hit the ground running today, holding a rock walk at Picnic Point, where the young people were encouraged to change their perspective, look ahead to their future at the AITC, and consider where their paths may lead as we look to place them into Industry. The young people will have the opportunity this semester to explore the options they can take when looking toward a future in Industry.”

David has already recognised two young people for showing exceptional displays of leadership in their first weeks at the College. Jada and Baxter have taken initiative, shown courage, and been exceptionally well-mannered and kind to staff and their fellow students. Congratulations to Jada and Baxter for being excellent ambassadors for the AITC.

The Toowoomba campus is the fourth AITC campus to open, and there are plans to expand to 17 campuses by 2028. The AITC’s dreams are lofty, but the team is committed to reaching them in the next decade. David is excited and eager to see the College grow throughout Australia, providing young people across the country with the option to get a head start on a trade while completing their schooling.

The AITC would like to extend a huge welcome to all young people attending the Toowoomba campus, their parents, and new staff. The Toowoomba team looks forward to growing the campus, and anticipate many successes for the inaugural class of 2019!
