Baking a splash!
AITC Toowoomba’s Olivia Zavone impressed local employers so much that she was offered two baking positions, and had an additional offer for an animal grooming apprenticeship on the way. “I was offered two positions at the same time,” said Olivia. “I decided to take the one at Brumby’s after taking some time to think about it. The qualification I am completing is in baking and pastry making, so I will get to work with breads as well.” Olivia will work at Brumby’s around half the year until her graduation, after which she will commence full-time employment.
Oliva enrolled in the College in 2020 after leaving her previous school to pursue a career in animal health, which was her initial career pathway goal. “I thought animals would be my career, and cakes and baking would be more of a hobby,” said Olivia. But when speaking with Industry Consultant, Chris McEwan about her passion for baking and decorating cakes, he said “show us what you’ve got!” The following day, Olivia brought a spectacularly decorated cake into the College.
Olivia has been making cakes for friends and family for quite some time, especially enjoying the decorating element. “I have sold a couple of cakes to friends, but I mostly make them for fun,” says Olivia. “After talking with [Industry Consultants] Chris and Elisa, I started to think that maybe cakes could be my job, and animals might be more of a hobby,” says Olivia. “People were really impressed with my cakes and said I have a talent for it. I might go back and work with animals later in life, but I’m really happy doing cakes at the moment.”
When the AITC Toowoomba campus on Russell Street celebrated its one year anniversary last month, Olivia’s celebratory cake was a highlight. “Olivia costed out the cake and created a budget for it, and we bought all the ingredients” says Customer Experience Officer Alicia Murphy. “She often brings beautiful cakes into school, so we thought it would be the perfect way to celebrate our one year milestone.”
Congratulations to Olivia, Brumby’s Westridge has certainly got a future star baker on their hands!
